Location excellent - for getting there, getting out and about and sightseeing and there were a good selection of eating places close by. We had a good street view which we enjoyed.

I feel I could not recommend the Base Auckland to others of 'mature' age - we are 60yrs young - for these reasons. 1. The lifts didn't always work as intended and we felt this was dangerous. 2. The bedspread (although a dark colour)on our bed looked unclean with stains of a "dubious nature" on the white underside. 3. We should have been alerted by the advertisment of the "great bar" - but we found a Friday and Saturday night stay very disturbing with the loud thomping sound coming from the "great bar".

First, I got a room in the 3rd floor, it was directly above a night club. It was very very noisy. It felt like you were sleeping in the club. Then I changed the room. The new room was better but still very noisy. At the second night I changed the room again. The new room was in the 7th floor. You could not hear the club but the air conditioner was very loud. You could not switch it off. It was also too cold because of the air conditioner. All in one, it was a horrible stay. It was too expensive for the noisy and untidy rooms. The staff was not very friendly and incompetent. I would not recommend it.

The location is good, being right in the centre of town.

Dirty bathrooms, toilet door did not have a lock, shower tap the push button type= annoying. My dorm room was way too hot. When I was staying there a girl got stuck in the lift for an hour! However the stairs were annoying because you could not get into the floor that way, so really you need to use the lift! The staff were helpful but the que to see them was always long and they seemed overworked. I would not recommend this backpackers- there must be a better option.

I liked the fact that I was leaving early the next day

I thought it was over priced, I could not control the air vent blasting cold air into my room. there were'nt enough blankets on the bed. The bathroom was unclean so I went without a shower and felt unsafe when I went to my room as there was no lighting in the corridor my room was located on. It seemed dark and felt dangerous with drunk people wandering around randomly.

    Location and friendly staff.

Noisy air con, could not adjust individual room temperature.

I booked a bed at base because that was what i required, a bed. I stayed in the sanctuary girls only dorm. However, i didnt get just a bed. I met great people during the course of my 5 day stay and had a very enjoyable time. The handiness of globe bar in the basement is brilliant as one can have a night out, yet get back to ones bed quickly, easily and safely

The showers are very very small and have no bench to put ones things on, only hooks which are not always practical

The staff worked hard to sort any issues that we had, very polite. It's in the heart of Auckland so it was easy for us to get around. The room was ok, basic but good.

Couldn't sleep. To many drunk travellers. On to many occasions you would over hear people's conversations and the highlights of there adventures would be to tell what the alcohol was like in various countries, pathetic. The drunks were so inconsiderate and Base doesn't help the situation by allowing the hostel to be littered with daily handouts on such drinking events as 'olympic drinking'. Other than the verbal and advertising abuse from alcohol it would of been good!

The location. Right on queens street. You can't get more central than that. They had two tv rooms.

Don't really know where to start. Had to queue for 30mins just to check in. The staff didn't seem bothered we were all waiting. The hostel was old and run down. I don't think I've ever been in a more depressing place. The beds were rickety. The cost of wifi was ridiculous when it should be free. Go to the library around the corner! No change machine near the laundry and considering base auckland is such a huge hostel, that's just stupid. The showers were old and felt grimy. I didn't feel clean after I had one. The water turned off every 10 seconds and you had to press the button again.

    great location, good price

noisy air conditioning, not very clean, booked two rooms and when arrived was told only one room was available

I liked the fact that Base Auckland is close to every facility we could possibly need. The staff were extra friendly & helpful whenever we approached them for whatever reason, nothing was too trivial for them to be bothered with. Would I return........YES definitely!!!

Perhaps the way in which the bacon & eggs were cooked..on a portable grill??!!

    Location. Friendly staff.

Bathrooms were disgusting - the gents had fecal matter all over bowl of toilet. and the sinks were not clean. The stench had been developing for more than just a day. Possibly somewhere closer to a week. Ladies not much better. Showers not clean either.

    very convenien to shops.

so hard to find a car park and it is very expancive to park. I spend $28 for 2 hour parking.

  • Older travelers

    Good location.

The bed was uncomfortable with 1, cheap pillow. Under the bed and behind the curtains were empty beer bottles. The lifts did not work effectively. Residents had blocked open fire doors so they could get in and out. I suspect this would be contrary to heathe and safety and fire regulations. This place could be great but appears to be poorly managed. When we arrived there was a big queue, two girls trying their best while other staff milled around doing nothing. Get your act together. The concept is great but the management and execution very poor......

Tiny rooms (four bed dorm made into 6 to cash in on the world cup?), no fridge in room as advertised, fridges in kitchen too small. Two out of the three lifts were out of order my entire stay. No access to stairwell meant waiting up to 10 minutes for the lift. House keeping came to clean the room 9.15 every morning, despite check-out being at 10 am. Room wasn't vacumed all week. To cap things off my food was stolen from the kitchen. Terrible hostel

  • Single

I liked the amount of facilities for the young traveler but I'm an older traveler and the off hours of the young was not pleasant. But it's for the young so I understand.
